Technology Transforming Ocean Protection: Entering a New Era of Innovation

Meet Panel 3 of the 7th Annual IPBN Sustainability Conference

As the global community looks for smarter, faster, and more collaborative ways to protect our oceans, technology is emerging as one of the most powerful tools in the fight for marine sustainability. At this year’s IPBN Sustainability Conference one of the most anticipated discussions will explore how cutting-edge innovation is transforming the way we monitor, understand, and protect marine ecosystems.

Taking place on Tuesday, 17 March at the UE Oriente Green Campus, the conference will bring together leaders from business, science, and technology to examine the theme “Ocean – The Blue Economy.” One of the conference’s key panels, “Technology Transforming Ocean Protection: What’s Next for Tech-Driven Marine Protection?,” will focus on the new era of innovation reshaping how we safeguard the oceans. From artificial intelligence and drones to the Internet of Things, these technologies are enabling real-time monitoring, predictive modelling, and unprecedented global collaboration. Together, they are redefining how researchers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers respond to environmental challenges at sea.

The discussion will bring together a diverse group of experts whose work spans technology innovation, marine science, and entrepreneurial leadership.

Tech entrepreneur and author Lee Bristow will bring a perspective rooted in digital innovation and risk technology. A serial founder and the CEO, CTO, and Co-Founder of Risk Copilot and Dawn Horizon, Lee has built his career at the intersection of AI, automation, and risk management. His work focuses on simplifying complex risk challenges through what he describes as a Human–AI alliance, blending technological capability with human judgment. In addition to leading innovative RiskTech ventures, he is the author of Human AI Alliance – Meditations for Leaders and a frequent keynote speaker on the future of AI-driven business strategy.

From the academic world, Pedro Costa, Associate Professor at the University of Coimbra, will contribute deep scientific insight into ocean processes and coastal dynamics. His research focuses on the sedimentological identification and differentiation of tsunami and storm deposits during the Holocene period. Through studying the sedimentary record along the Atlantic seaboard, Pedro’s work helps scientists better understand the history, frequency, and impact of extreme marine events. His broader research also examines sediment dynamics across coastal, marine, and aeolian environments, offering critical knowledge that informs long-term ocean monitoring and resilience strategies.

Joining the conversation is Agostinho da Silva, Board Member of the MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre and an academic contributor at Católica Porto Business School. Agostinho is also the co-founder and managing director of the engineering group CEI-Zipor, which develops advanced industrial technologies across multiple sectors including aeronautics, automotive, and mineral resources. With a strong background in naval engineering and Industry 4.0, his work bridges industrial innovation with sustainability and technological transformation. His research and leadership experience provide valuable insight into how advanced technologies can support both economic development and environmental stewardship.

Entrepreneur and innovation advocate Mario Gago will offer a perspective shaped by building technology solutions with global impact. As co-founder and CEO of Pink Room, a mobile digital product consultancy based in Coimbra, Mario leads a team that has delivered more than sixty digital projects for organizations across Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. His work emphasizes user-centered design, sustainability, and the role of technology in solving real-world challenges. In addition to leading Pink Room, Mario plays an active role in fostering entrepreneurship and international collaboration as a Board Member of the Ireland Portugal Business Network and through his work supporting startups and innovation communities.

Together, these panelists represent the powerful intersection of science, technology, entrepreneurship, and international collaboration that defines the future of ocean protection. Their conversation will explore how new technologies are transforming marine monitoring, enabling faster responses to environmental threats, and creating opportunities for deeper cooperation between countries with strong maritime identities such as Ireland and Portugal.

The conference itself will offer attendees the opportunity not only to hear from leading experts but also to engage in meaningful dialogue about the evolving Blue Economy. Through a series of panels and discussions, participants will discover the current landscape of ocean sustainability, explore innovative solutions, and connect with professionals and organizations working at the forefront of marine protection.

For anyone interested in sustainability, technology, marine science, or international business collaboration, the IPBN Sustainability Conference offers a unique platform to connect, learn, and contribute to shaping the future of the Blue Economy.

Registration is now open, and participants are encouraged to secure their place and join this important conversation about how innovation and collaboration can help protect our oceans for generations to come.
