Turning Knowledge into Culture, and Culture into Opportunity

At the intersection of publishing, cultural exchange, and business expertise, Ring of Culture is building a creative enterprise with an international outlook and a mission to turn ideas and knowledge into meaningful projects.

Founded in October 2025, Ring of Culture brings together the experience of its founder as a writer, literary translator, publisher, and cultural practitioner, alongside a professional background in corporate procurement. Based in Bray, County Wicklow, the business works with writers, translators, artists, professionals, and organisations to develop projects that connect creativity, knowledge, and entrepreneurship.

But the story behind Ring of Culture began long before its official launch.

From independent publishing to a new creative venture

Vitor Vicente's journey into publishing dates back to 2005, when he established Canto Escuro, an independent publishing venture in Portugal that ran until 2010. In September 2026, the launch of Recanto Escuro, Ring of Culture's Portuguese- and Spanish-language publishing imprint, marked both an expansion of the business and a return to those independent publishing roots.

Having lived and worked in several European countries, Vitor developed a strong interest in connecting people, ideas, and creative work across borders. His own experience as an author also provided a first-hand understanding of the challenges facing independent writers and cultural professionals.

"Ring of Culture emerged from the ambition to build an independent creative business where publishing, translation, cultural events, education, and entrepreneurship could complement one another."

The business brings together two seemingly different professional worlds: the cultural and creative industries, and the commercial discipline of corporate procurement. While writing, translation, editorial work, and publishing provide the creative foundation, experience in strategic sourcing, commercial negotiation, supplier management, budgeting, and stakeholder coordination brings a practical business perspective to each project.

This combination allows Ring of Culture to support projects from the initial idea through to delivery, helping individuals and organisations turn specialist knowledge, stories, and creative concepts into accessible publications and experiences.

A growing portfolio of publishing and cultural projects

Ring of Culture is currently developing several complementary initiatives, each reflecting its ambition to connect people and ideas through creative work.

One of its newest projects is Make It Work – Books for Business, a publishing collection aimed at entrepreneurs, executives, professionals, and companies. The collection will cover business books, practical guides, professional memoirs, and commissioned technical publications, helping organisations and individuals share specialist knowledge in areas such as negotiation, procurement, and SEO.

Alongside this, Witty Wicklow Writers Magazine has already published two issues, providing a platform for emerging and established writers. Recanto Escuro extends the company's publishing activities into Portuguese- and Spanish-language markets, while its creative services support authors, publishers, and organisations with editorial production, book design, layout, pagination, and preparation for print and digital publication.

The business is also developing international literary events, cultural travel experiences, educational workshops, and multilingual communication services. Together, these activities reflect a broader ambition: to create sustainable creative projects that connect culture, knowledge, and professional opportunities.

Building connections through international cultural exchange

Two recent initiatives demonstrate how Ring of Culture is putting that ambition into practice.

The first, "County Pairings — Ireland and Europe in Conversation," brings together four Irish counties and four European countries through literary events and cultural conversations: Wicklow and Spain, Dublin and Greece, Offaly and Belgium, and Louth and Portugal.

Supported by funding from Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs and recognised as an Associated Event of Ireland's 2026 Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the programme brings writers and cultural practitioners together to encourage international dialogue and closer cultural connections.

The Wicklow–Spain event took place in October, with Dublin–Greece scheduled for November and the remaining two events planned for December. The initiative demonstrates how an independent creative organisation can bring together international partners, secure institutional support, and coordinate a programme involving multiple stakeholders.

A second example is Witty Wicklow Writers Magazine, which began as an idea to give writers a platform and has developed into a tangible literary publication. With two issues already released, the project brings together editorial selection, author engagement, design, production, printing, and distribution, while supporting creative talent and building a readership.

Both projects demonstrate the breadth of Ring of Culture's capabilities, from developing an idea and bringing partners together to delivering a finished product or experience.

Making knowledge count

For Vitor, the value of publishing and cultural collaboration goes beyond producing books or organising events. It is about making knowledge accessible and giving professional experience a life beyond the individual or organisation that first developed it.

"I believe that every professional and every organisation accumulates knowledge, skills, and experiences worth sharing. Too often, valuable expertise remains confined to individual careers, internal documents, or informal conversations."

Through publishing, education, and creative collaboration, that knowledge can become something lasting, helping others develop new skills, discover different perspectives, and grow personally and professionally.

It is also a message that resonates with the wider IPBN community. Across Ireland and Portugal, businesses and professionals have stories, expertise, and experiences that could benefit others, provided they find the right way to share them.

As he puts it:

"Your skills and your story can make a difference in someone else's personal and professional journey."

For Ring of Culture, the invitation to fellow IPBN members is to think about what they know, what they have learned, and what they could pass on. Whether through a business book, a technical guide, a professional memoir, or a cultural project, there is an opportunity to turn that experience into something meaningful.

And the company's promise is neatly captured in its closing message:

"You write it down. We make it work."
