Spotlight on Jarred White, Founder and Partner of Sente Security

Cyber-security services and more

Sente Security takes its name from the Japanese word "sente," which loosely translates to having the initiative or advantage, as evidenced by the word's connection to the Chinese game Go. Jarred White, a veteran security and privacy leader with over twenty years of experience, has drawn from his expertise to strategically build Sente to allow companies to place potential cyber-attackers (or just broken processes) at a serious disadvantage. Jarred told the IPBN, "It's not a question of whether it's a question of when. When a potential partner asks about security or when a breach happens, companies will need to be ready to answer that."

Jarred's journey with computing began in the mid-90s as an early adopter of Linux and Open Source in the United States and continued through the early 2000s as an ethical hacker focused on network and application security. According to the company website, he has a wealth of experience "building and leading high-performing security and privacy engineering organizations and consulting teams, overseeing compliance and risk management programs such as PCI, HIPAA, SOC 2, and NIST, and developing corporate information security programs from the ground up." a

And now, Jarred and his family are Portuguese residents. The decision to move to Portugal was unsurprisingly a strategic process for Jarred, having interviewed many of his international team members about their home countries and coming to the realization that Portugal was standing out from the crowd. He told the IPBN, "One of the folks on the team was from Portugal, and my conversations with him about all the amazing things the country has to offer stuck out. I wanted myself and my family to be in a place that shared our values and took care of its people. It's a great place to raise kids and to live a more socially and environmentally conscious life."

Aside from his family, Jarred brought with him his company, which he founded as a fractional executive service, meaning that their clients can spend a fraction of their time by allocating audits, privacy programs, and program and direct management of security systems straight to Sente. Jarred said, "We also work as an advisory for SMEs and startups that don't necessarily have the capacity to handle cybersecurity on their own yet through retainer services. Security and compliance are super hot topics for companies nowadays, and many need guidance to safeguard data that is regulated, especially in the E.U.. Often, people rush to market without putting a lot of thought into protection until either the team grows or something happens. Our services will allow them to take on bigger and more important clients safely."

Part of the reason that Jarred founded the company was because of the serious lack of services in Portugal, which has a robust and growing tech scene. There is a lot of opportunity within the Portuguese cyber-security sector to truly make a difference, especially when the service team's talents have been honed in the United States. Jarred's work with silicon valley over the last two decades has placed him among the elite, and now he is ready to share them with companies here in Portugal as a shortcut with proven rigor.

"There is a lot of amazing talent here in Portugal, which will translate well into what the tech community here is trying to do. In this sense, Sente's expereince with mergers and acquisitions is a leg up for businesses on the Iberian peninsula, as well as a desirable partner in the private equity and venture capitalist sphere."
