The University for the Future

To follow up on our conversation with Daniel Traça, Dean of Nova SBE, we are sharing here a recent article that Daniel published in the Portuguese magazine PREMIO. In this article, Daniel argues that Portugal is on a path to success in higher education. The percentage of young people between the ages of thirty and thirty-four with complete higher education increased from 11.1% in 2000 to 36.2% in 2019.

However, the difficulty in responding to a symbiotic generation with technology and social media, and in developing their skills for a career in companies facing huge challenges of huge size, complexity, uncertainty and volatility, is something new and requires renovation and innovation from Portuguese universities.

The challenges are huge. Daniel presents five clues to this renovation:

  1. The focus on impact
  2. Opening up to society
  3. Interdisciplinarity
  4. The skills of the future
  5. The University’s social responsibility
